The missing middle is every urbanist’s favourite subject—how can we fulfill housing supply requirements without large, “out-of-scale” towers or too-small single family dwellings?

A close read of the neighbourhood of Praunheim, Frankfurt established a tight arrangement of row houses (triplexes or denser) and scattered mid-sized buildings. Though a desirable middle scale was achieved, the number of housing units and other land use designations fell short of requirements for a site located in Toronto.

The answer: the (super)tall. Slotted into place—literally—the iconic tower fulfills the deficit while allowing a vast majority of the site to remain desirably middle. From afar, the tower rivals the CN tower.

Though rhetorical in nature, the (super)tall effectively visualizes the housing deficit present at this particular study site and many others in Toronto.
